A Closer Look at ‘One Night Only’: A Unique Romantic Comedy

Universal Pictures unveils its latest romantic comedy, “One Night Only,” featuring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro. Directed by Will Gluck, this film dives into a fictional scenario where Congress enforces a law banning premarital sex, except for one annual exception. Set in an alternate America, the government monitors compliance with sensor-equipped wristbands. In New York City, the exception night is celebrated much like a holiday. Streets bustle with anticipation as singles aim to maximize the limited 12-hour window to connect.

Owen, a pizzeria owner played by Callum Turner, plans a special evening with his girlfriend, portrayed by Maya Hawke, but his plans fall apart when she opts to explore other romantic options. Simultaneously, Monica Barbaro’s character, Allie, finds herself unexpectedly alone when her friend partners up with someone at a bar.

The film follows the predictable yet entertaining path of romantic comedy. Owen and Allie cross paths multiple times throughout the night, leading to comedic and adventurous moments.

Meanwhile, the film blends elements of dystopian comedy and romance effectively. Screenwriter Travis Braun makes his feature film debut with a noteworthy script, pivoting from his previous work in children’s programming. Director Will Gluck, known for “Easy A” and “Friends with Benefits,” balances the film’s inherent absurdity with comedic charm.
