Hydrogen and EV Innovations Take Center Stage at CES 2024

At CES 2024 in Las Vegas, hydrogen energy and electric vehicles (EVs) are key topics of discussion. While EVs often attract attention for carbon-neutral technology, major automakers are highlighting hydrogen’s potential as well.

Hyundai’s Hydrogen Ambitions

Hyundai presented its hydrogen energy plans at the event. The company intends to broaden its scope beyond hydrogen-powered vehicles, moving into hydrogen energy production, storage, and transportation. According to José Muñoz, Hyundai’s president and global chief operating officer, this strategy is not only feasible but is projected to become economically viable.

Bosch’s Hydrogen Combustion Engine

Bosch Mobility announced the release of its first hydrogen combustion engine this year. This development marks an important step in decreasing global carbon emissions. Both Bosch and Hyundai are motivated by substantial investments such as the $7 billion commitment from the U.S. government to develop hydrogen infrastructure.

Honda’s “Thin, Light, and Wise” EVs

Honda presented new concept vehicles, “Saloon” and “Space-Hub,” focusing on minimizing battery size and weight. Called the Zero Series, these models aim for efficiency in EV development. In a move set for 2025, Kia will start producing electric vans in South Korea that can switch from cargo vans to taxis. VinFast from Vietnam also introduced its new electric truck concept, the VF Wild.

Advancements in In-Car Tech Ecosystems

Mercedes-Benz showcased updates to its AI-powered infotainment systems, enhancing driver interaction with features like automated driving and personalized settings. Other automakers are partnering with Google to integrate Google Maps and Assistant into vehicle systems. Nissan, Lincoln, and Porsche are among those adopting this technology.

Progress on Solid-State Batteries

Honda revealed further strategies for its Zero Series and EV advancements, focusing on solid-state battery development. Executive Vice President Shinji Aoyama detailed plans to use these more stable and powerful batteries in Honda vehicles by the late 2020s.

Comparatively, current EVs rely on lithium-ion batteries, which are more prone to fire risks. Honda’s research and development lead, Mitsuru Kariya, explained that solid-state batteries offer higher energy density, potentially resulting in lighter, more efficient vehicles. Toyota is also exploring solid-state battery technology through a partnership with Idemitsu.

These developments at CES 2024 highlight the ongoing efforts by automakers to innovate in both hydrogen and electric vehicle technology.
