The Kansas City Chiefs are set to face the Los Angeles Rams in their preseason opener on August 15. The game comes amid notable developments, particularly concerning their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes is recovering from an ACL tear he experienced in Week 15 of the 2025 season. Team head coach Andy Reid indicated that Mahomes is unlikely to participate in preseason games. Reid shared, “There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him [against the Rams],” as reported by ProFootballTalk. He added that the likelihood remains low for Mahomes playing in the second or third games as well.
We’ve got new people in those other positions behind him that need some work, and so the more reps they get, the better.
Reid emphasized the importance of giving reps to backup options. Justin Fields, entering his first season with the Chiefs after an offseason trade, is Mahomes’ primary backup. Additionally, Garrett Nussmeier, a seventh-round rookie, stands to gain from more playing time.
Following the clash with the Rams, the Chiefs will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Seattle Seahawks in subsequent preseason games. Their regular-season campaign begins with a Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
