Jennifer Stone, known for her work on the Disney Channel, attributes her role as an emergency room nurse with helping her stay grounded. Transitioning from the glitz of Disney fame to the demands of healthcare offered her a unique perspective.
Balancing Two Worlds
Stone’s life took an interesting turn as she juggled her return to the ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ franchise with the gritty realities of working in an emergency room. In an interview on the ‘Cheers’ podcast with Avery Woods, she shared the challenges and humbling experiences that came with this dual life. “Trying to post from a hospital with poor Wi-Fi, then immediately going back to my duties really kept me grounded,” she said.
Her experiences in healthcare stood in stark contrast to the glamorous bubble of Hollywood. She compared her time on the Disney Channel to a heightened version of high school, complete with all its dramas but with the added complexities that come with fame and financial freedom at a young age.
Support and Normalcy
Stone credited her parents for preventing her from being swept away by the Hollywood lifestyle. Her parents, both computer science majors, saw her passion for acting and supported her ambitions while ensuring she maintained a sense of normalcy. This support became crucial when a writers’ strike took her back to Texas during the run of ‘Wizards of Waverly Place,’ where she worked as an elf in a Santa photo studio.
Life-Changing Diagnosis
Stone’s journey took a more serious turn with a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis at the age of 20. This personal health challenge ultimately inspired her to study nursing. Her experiences as a patient provided her with a new perspective on life, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
‘You do not sweat the small stuff,’ Stone explained, emphasizing how the pressures of Hollywood became trivial in comparison to real-life challenges. She urges her actor friends to appreciate life, health, and the opportunities they have, a lesson she learned through exposure to far more significant hardships.
