Indiana Fever Coach Stephanie White Addresses Controversies

Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White expressed her frustration over discussions surrounding the WNBA that do not focus on basketball. On a recent Tuesday, she spoke out against these distractions.

White, the 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year, defended herself following criticism of her response to DiJonai Carrington’s flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham. She urged people to concentrate on the game.

“The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness that’s trying to hijack our league will not win. It won’t win,” White said, emphatically. “We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided. Love will win. Grace will win. Humility will win and kindness will win.”

White left the press conference after her brief yet passionate speech without taking any questions.

In response, the Indiana Fever delivered one of their best performances, defeating the New York Liberty 106-92. The team has won seven of their last nine games, despite ongoing controversies. Fever All-Star Caitlin Clark supported White’s remarks and was disturbed by boos directed at White during her introduction.

Clark commented, “I spoke to Steph earlier. We often forget she’s human and has feelings. It’s okay to feel emotions, and I’ve experienced similar times.” She emphasized, “There was no way we were losing this game. That’s my head coach. I hated the boos from our fans.”

The controversy began when Carrington hit Cunningham in the head during a layup, causing Cunningham to react before being stopped. Carrington received a Flagrant 2 foul. Carrington later addressed accusations about mentioning “white privilege” in relation to the incident, clarifying her stance.

Cunningham, known for her strong opinions on transgender athletes, has sparked rallies with her statements. White initially supported the referees’ call, not perceiving the foul as intentional.

The decision faced backlash, including criticism from Indiana Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith. He tweeted that White should be let go, accusing her of siding with an opponent over her player. White explained she had not seen the foul replay when she initially commented, later describing it as egregious.

“Our players’ success, health, wellness, and safety are priorities,” White said. “I pride myself on my player relationships. I had not seen the replay initially, but considering it now, it was indeed egregious.”

During Tuesday’s game, Cunningham received a warm reception. After the game, she affirmed the strong relationship with White.

“There’s been noise, but our locker room is good,” Cunningham stated. “Coach loves us. She didn’t see the clip—that’s okay. Our relationship is strong.”

White dealt with a similar situation earlier in the season with Clark. Speculation arose about her job status, but White now aims to shift focus back to basketball.

“It’s a shame we can’t discuss the great basketball they’re playing,” White emphasized. “I lead with love, grace, humility, and integrity. I won’t always be right because I’m human.”
