Karoline Leavitt Steps Down as White House Press Secretary
Karoline Leavitt, the youngest person to serve as White House press secretary, will leave her role at the end of the month. Leavitt announced her decision to step down from the Trump administration to focus on her family.
Leavitt, 28, shared her decision in a social media post, describing it as ‘bittersweet.’ She made the announcement shortly after President Donald Trump confirmed her departure. Leavitt recently returned to her duties after giving birth to her second child, Viviana, in May. She also has a 2-year-old son.
The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary.
In his social media response, Trump expressed understanding and respect for her decision. He indicated that Leavitt would remain an influential figure, continuing to advise him and contribute to the Republican Party’s efforts in upcoming elections.
New Role
Leavitt will transition to a position as one of Trump’s top outside advisors. Her previous experience includes working for MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting Trump, and running for Congress in New Hampshire. Although she secured a primary win, she lost the general election to Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas. During Trump’s first term, Leavitt served as an aide in the White House press office and later as communications director for Rep. Elise Stefanik.
Media Engagement
Leavitt’s media presence differed from her predecessors. While President Trump frequently engaged with the press, he preferred deploying Leavitt to conservative outlets like Fox News. She focused on promoting his agenda and criticizing opposition media. Trump’s former press secretaries included Sean Spicer and Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who often clashed with reporters. Stephanie Grisham, another press secretary, held no briefings during her tenure, while Kayleigh McEnany frequently addressed the media.
