Multiple Executions Scheduled Across Three States

Three men are set for execution in Tennessee, Alabama, and Oklahoma on Thursday, marking a rare occurrence of concurrent executions in the United States. A man in Tennessee is facing execution for murdering a motel maid. An individual in Oklahoma is scheduled to be executed for killing his girlfriend. Meanwhile, an Alabama man will be put to death following his decision to cease appeals in the case of a 5-year-old girl’s murder after he had paid her mother to abuse the child.

Tennessee Execution Details

Tennessee plans to execute Anthony Darrell Hines for the 1985 murder of Catherine Jean Jenkins. Hines stabbed Jenkins while she was working as a motel maid in Kingston Springs. His death sentence was initially given in 1986, appealed, and reissued in 1989. Hines, now 66, recently faced a failed attempt to halt his execution, citing potential IV issues due to his medical condition. The state’s Supreme Court ruled against his appeal, labeling past issues an isolated mishap.

The state previously experienced IV insertion problems during Tony Carruthers’ execution attempt. Carruthers was granted a reprieve by Governor Bill Lee after difficulties with IV insertions. The state has not confirmed if the same medical professional will oversee Hines’ execution.

Alabama Case Involving Child Murder

Jeremy Williams is slated for execution in Alabama for the 2021 rape and murder of 5-year-old Kamarie Holland. Williams admitted to the crime and rejected appeals, requesting the execution occur. He committed the crime in exchange for a monetary arrangement with the child’s mother and filmed the act, per prosecutors. This case marks Alabama’s first scheduled execution of the year following the suspension of a nitrogen gas execution method deemed unconstitutional.

Williams was also a suspect in a 2005 infant death case in Alaska, with charges finally brought in 2022. Kamarie’s father described his daughter as a lively child who loved dressing up and enjoyed princess themes. The child’s mother is serving a 20-year prison term for pleading guilty to sex trafficking.

Oklahoma Execution Details

Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez is set for execution in Oklahoma, convicted of the 2003 murder of his girlfriend Olimpia Fisher. He was sentenced for shooting her twice in the eyes at their shared home. Cuesta-Rodriguez expressed remorse but did not seek clemency.

Attorney General Gentner Drummond described the crime as a result of Fisher’s desire to escape Cuesta-Rodriguez’s control. The state’s Pardon and Parole Board denied clemency. Cuesta-Rodriguez’s defense highlighted his difficult upbringing in Cuba and mental health issues, including brain damage and PTSD.
