Paris Jackson recently discussed how her father, Michael Jackson, enforced a strict set of rules to maintain a sense of normalcy for his children. Despite their exceptional upbringing, the late pop icon maintained control over his children’s activities. Paris, speaking with Alexandra Cooper on the podcast ‘Call Her Daddy,’ shared details about her father’s parenting style.
Childhood Discipline
Michael Jackson required Paris and her siblings to finish their homework and chores before enjoying any weekend activities. He also limited their television and movie time. Paris described a consistent message throughout her childhood: complete your responsibilities for weekend rewards such as visiting animals, rides, or movies.
“If you’re good, and you do your chores, and you do your homework, and you do the things that you’re supposed to do. Then on the weekends you can go see some animals, and you can go ride some rides, and you can go to the movies,” Paris recalled.
Neverland Ranch and Beyond
While Neverland Ranch had numerous attractions, Paris emphasized they were meant for underprivileged and terminally ill children, not for her family. This routine continued as they moved frequently, rarely staying in one place for more than a year. Whether in Las Vegas or a small town in Virginia, the rule remained: earn fun by completing tasks.
Michael allowed his children to watch movies or TV only after meeting their duties. An exception was made for watching films without sound for study purposes.
Privacy and Anonymity
Michael took steps to protect his children from the public eye. Paris recalled wearing masks in public, a strategy to help them blend unnoticed. This measure allowed them to enjoy places such as Chuck E. Cheese without drawing attention.
“It made sense because it was like, ‘Oh yeah, if you do this now, then you can go to Chuck E. Cheese and be normal this weekend ’cause no one will know who you are,'” Paris explained.
Lack of Understanding of Fame
Paris knew her father was famous but was unaware of the extent. Reflecting on events where large crowds would gather, she realized her experience was far from ordinary.
“I just didn’t know how famous … when I looked out my hotel window … there’s just like a sea of people with signs and stuff,” she admitted.
Career in Entertainment
Following Michael’s death in 2009, Paris embarked on her own path in entertainment. With roles in modeling and acting, she signed with Republic Records and released her debut album, “Wilted,” in 2020. Her brothers, Prince and Bigi, are also pursuing careers in entertainment.
