South Carolina Prosecutors Oppose Alex Murdaugh’s Venue Change Request

South Carolina prosecutors are opposing Alex Murdaugh’s request to transfer his trial to Charleston. They argue that the defense’s insistence on Charleston presents logistical challenges and excessive expenses.

In a court document filed Wednesday, the state requested the court to reject Murdaugh’s attempt to designate Charleston, known as the ‘Holy City,’ as the sole viable venue.

Officials highlighted that although Charleston is famous for its industry, arts, and tourism, it is the most challenging county in South Carolina for a trial of this size. Murdaugh’s trial is scheduled tentatively for April 2027.

Prosecutors listed various logistical issues, citing traffic and parking complications in downtown Charleston, which would worsen with an increase of jurors, witnesses, media, and spectators.

The filing also mentioned that the tourist season in spring and the Masters week traffic would significantly raise local hotel prices. Furthermore, prosecutors noted that spring storms and king tides often cause downtown flooding.

The prosecution suggested other locations such as Spartanburg, York, or Florence as viable alternatives. They argued that Murdaugh does not deserve a venue change solely because of widespread news coverage.

The defense originally requested a venue change, citing extensive publicity, familial connections, and compromised courthouse integrity in Colleton County. The state’s response followed this request, emphasizing that moving the trial to Charleston does not solve these issues.

Murdaugh is due for a pretrial hearing at the Lexington County Courthouse, scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m.
