Stockard Channing Embraces Quiet Life in the UK

Stockard Channing, known for her role in “Grease,” shared her thoughts on living a reclusive life in the United Kingdom. She relocated to London “just before COVID,” following the death of her partner, Daniel Gilham, in 2014.

In an essay for The Sunday Times, Channing expressed contentment with her solitude, noting, “I’ve lived alone since I lost Daniel, and I’m happy being a recluse.” Before Gilham, she had been married four times, each representing different phases of her life.

Reflecting on societal norms from her youth, she wrote, “I grew up in the sixties, reacting to that repressed notion of marriage and sexuality from the fifties kinda like Rizzo.” She mentioned considering children now, while noting, “Children can be just as selfish as everybody else out there.”

The loss of Daniel Gilham, she admitted, had a profound impact. “His death was more devastating than I realized; it had a lag effect,” Channing confessed. Her move to London marked a significant shift prompted by both personal and political changes.

As Channing reminisced about her time on “The West Wing,” she highlighted the political climate’s evolution. “The cast had a good look at that Washington world,” she recalled, contrasting it with today’s political discourse. She related closely to her character Abbey Bartlet, known for her integrity, finding parallels in her own life.

Describing her current routine, Channing shared her leisurely mornings. Her day begins at 7 a.m. when her dog wakes her. “My dog walker takes him out, and I go back to bed,” she wrote, describing her ideal start to the day.

Channing fills her mornings with diary writing. “My duvet is covered in ink spots,” she shared, due to years spent with her fountain pen. By 10 a.m., she attempts some exercise, although she often skips it.

Lunch serves as her first meal of the day, with her culinary skills reserved for experimentation. “If my ramen doesn’t work out, I give it to the dog,” she noted humorously.

When venturing outside, Channing pays little attention to fashion. “Do I care how I look?” she questioned. While she maintains a wardrobe from past decades, she emphasized authenticity over appearances.

Reflecting on her diverse fan base, Channing noted how different generations recognize her for various roles. From “Practical Magic” to “The West Wing” and “Grease,” her work spans decades. “Films are like songs; they take you back to a particular time in your life,” she mused.
