Air Force One Decoy Flight Secured by Fighter Jets
A senior Trump administration official revealed that a “decoy” Air Force One, used for President Donald Trump’s secret departure, had protection from U.S. fighter jets on its way to the United Kingdom. This security measure dispels media concerns about possible vulnerabilities to hostile threats after Trump’s flight from Ankara, Turkey.
The security precautions during the president’s plane switch were exceptional. This operation saw the aircraft normally associated with Trump continuing its path to the U.K. without him, highlighting additional unseen layers of protection.
Onboard the “decoy” plane, under fighter jet protection, were Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The press corps, accompanying them, knew Trump wasn’t on board, according to the official.
The photo accompanying the report shows the press boarding Air Force One in Ankara with a catering truck positioned at the front of the plane.
The traveling staff and press pool had been advised to keep window shades closed during the flight, preventing visibility of the fighter escort outside. According to Tuesday’s pool report, there was little evidence of unusual activity at the airport as the press vehicles stayed distant within the motorcade. Photographers from their usual spot near the wing didn’t see Trump board an aircraft.
White House staff and reporters boarded the usual plane where they were greeted with bags of snack mix featuring the presidential seal. After boarding, they were instructed to keep shades down, a directive reiterated by a Secret Service agent when a shade was briefly opened.
A White House official informed reporters that the shade policy came at the Secret Service’s request.
Trump mentioned on Tuesday night that his security detail and the military prompted the aircraft switch, saying, “It’s only up to the Secret Service; I go along with their guidance.” This decision followed his trip to Geneva, Ohio, for the Freedom 250 Patriot Games.
In a follow-up remark, Trump suggested his new aircraft might have faced more threat after the swap, considering it was the plane he actually traveled on.
The State Department offered no comment regarding the fighter jets’ involvement.
Trump shared on the tarmac that the plane he did fly on may have been at a greater risk, reasoning it was the likely target.
