Florida Deputy’s Fatal Altercation and Its Aftermath

A tragic incident unfolded in Florida involving a sheriff’s deputy, Troy Savetz, who took the life of his former girlfriend, Mandy Fackler, and then himself. Fackler, the victim, was identified by friends. She leaves behind two children, aged 12 and 9. Savetz had served the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years and was part of the marine unit.

Incident Details

According to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, Savetz and Fackler had a tumultuous relationship. On the day of the incident, Savetz waited outside Fackler’s home. When Fackler returned from a day at the beach with her children, Savetz, upset about a television set, brandished a gun.

Fackler attempted to call 911, but Savetz took her phone. She instructed her children to go inside, which they did, but they never saw her again. The children showed great bravery by contacting 911, providing vital information to dispatchers regarding the suspect.

Search and Discovery

When police reached the scene, they found Fackler’s vehicle door open and her phone left behind. Officers, using K-9 teams, drones, and aviation units, set out to locate the vehicle Savetz used to abduct her.

Approximately 90 minutes later, authorities located the vehicle in Spring Hill. A drone confirmed the presence of two people inside. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers found both Savetz and Fackler deceased.

Impact on Family

Following the incident, Fackler’s children were placed with their biological father. Sheriff Chris Nocco commended the children for their calm manner and information provided during the emergency call, which expedited police response.

Nocco emphasized that the children did exactly what Fackler instructed, ensuring their safety. He praised them for their courage and assured them of their mother’s pride and the community’s ongoing support.

Savetz’s Background

Deputy Troy Savetz had a history of commendable service. In 2014, he was recognized for saving a young man’s life, preventing him from jumping off a bridge. His actions had earned him local acclaim, including being named “Our Everyday MVP” by the Tampa Bay Rays.

In 2018, Savetz adopted a pot-bellied pig, further raising his community profile. He and the pig, named Maple, served as ambassadors for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Tampa Bay.

Despite his past accolades, Sheriff Gualtieri clarified that Savetz’s criminal actions immediately terminated his role as a law enforcement officer. He stated, “The moment this individual committed a crime, he was no longer a law enforcement officer. He was a criminal.”
