Democrats’ Prospects in Wisconsin’s Gubernatorial Race Improve

The likelihood of Democrats retaining the Wisconsin governor’s office has increased, as indicated by prediction markets, following David Crowley’s primary win. Crowley, considered a moderate Democrat, triumphed over progressive state Representative Francesca Hong. He aims to be Wisconsin’s first Black governor and narrowly defeated Hong by positioning himself as the candidate most capable of defeating U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany in November. Tiffany, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, emerged as the Republican primary winner.

Initially, Crowley exited the race in early July but resumed his campaign after receiving outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ endorsement. Leading up to the primary, Republican chances of gaining the governorship had risen, largely due to Hong’s expected nomination. Public surveys showed Hong with a strong lead over Crowley and other contenders.

The Associated Press called the race for Crowley on Wednesday morning following Hong’s concession, shifting prediction markets back in favor of Democrats. At 8 a.m. Eastern time, Kashi prediction market gave Democrats a 78 percent chance of holding the office, up from 39.4 percent on Sunday. Meanwhile, Republican chances dropped to 22 percent, from 61.8 percent that Sunday. Similarly, on Polymarket, Democrats’ odds increased to 77 percent while Republicans fell to 22 percent.

Prediction markets allow traders to buy and sell contracts based on political outcomes or current events. They aggregate real-money wagers into probability estimates, though they may not always predict future outcomes accurately. Prices fluctuate as traders react to factors such as polls, fundraising, candidate developments, and political trends. Despite favorable predictions for Democrats, both the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball classify the gubernatorial race as a toss-up.

Candidates’ Strategies to Appeal to Independents

To secure a win in November, Crowley and Tiffany must attract moderate and independent voters critical in this swing state, known for its narrow election outcomes. Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, stated that Crowley aims to unite people and gain support from Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and those who believe Wisconsin prospers with collective effort.

Tiffany echoed this sentiment during his victory speech, appealing across political lines. He encouraged voters, regardless of their affiliation, to join his commonsense movement focused on future opportunities for the next generation.

Support from Mainstream Democrats

Crowley’s success followed backing from mainstream Democrats, concerned that candidates from the party’s left wing might struggle against Republicans in November. Some establishment Democrats doubted Hong’s appeal to moderate and independent voters.

Jim Kessler, executive vice president for policy at Third Way, mentioned that skepticism stemmed from structural realities of governor’s races rather than biases against Hong. He highlighted that governor races require voters to consider candidates’ impacts on taxes, businesses, schools, and safety.

Although Hong energized left-wing voters, notable progressive figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders did not endorse her, despite supporting other progressive candidates elsewhere. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized her focus on winning congressional seats and increasing Democrats’ chances in the Senate on ABC’s This Week.
