Bronze Age Gold Bracelets Unearthed by Detectorists in England

Two metal detector enthusiasts recently experienced an extraordinary find, unearthing three Bronze Age gold bracelets near Carlisle, England. Alan Daniels, 48, and Andy Crammond, 34, discovered the treasure in May, as reported by Bournemouth News and Picture Service (BNPS).

These exquisite bracelets, also known as torcs, date back to approximately 1100 B.C. They boast a combined weight of 18.27 ounces, or 1.14 pounds, and their estimated value stands at $400,000. Remarkably, the gold hasn’t tarnished over millennia, as noted by Daniels.

Crammond recounted to BNPS the thrill of almost having a heart attack upon discovering the first bracelet buried just a few inches underground. He quickly informed Daniels, who soon unearthed a second bracelet nearby. A third torc was later found about 20 feet from the initial discovery.

“Detectorists dream of these things, and that is how it still feels, like a dream,” Crammond expressed, adding that the find is incomparable to any previous ones.

This discovery marks Daniels’ first encounter with an item of significant value. Previously, both Daniels and Crammond often returned home without noteworthy finds.

The gold torcs are currently being evaluated by the British Museum. Their status as treasure under British law will be determined by a coroner. If classified as treasure, a museum or institution may purchase them at market value, with proceeds shared among Crammond, Daniels, and the landowner. Should no buyer emerge, the torcs could return to the finders for auction.
