Michael Phelps Encourages Son’s Interest in Swimming

Michael Phelps, famously known for his 23 career gold medals in the Olympics, appeared at the Pan Pacific Championships with two of his children. His 8-year-old son, Beckett, showed interest in swimming, attending the event with his family.

Phelps, accompanied by his wife Nicole and their sons Beckett and Maverick, observed the meet which featured teams from the U.S., Australia, Canada, and Japan. The youngest of their children, Nico, stayed at home with their eldest son, Boomer, 10, who took on the role of keeping him entertained.

Beckett’s curiosity in swimming is nurtured by Michael’s longtime coach, Bob Bowman, who acts as a mentor to the children. ‘Grandpa Bob is giving him some pointers here and there,’ said Phelps. Beckett seems to have the potential for a sprinter-type stroke, a contrast to his father’s style, which delights Phelps.

The family is considering coaching options in Phoenix for Beckett. Phelps expressed his willingness to support his son’s choice to swim but emphasized the importance of Beckett making his own decisions. ‘If he wants to be a swimmer, I will support it,’ he noted, underlining that fun is the priority.

Michael reminisced about his start in swimming, which began at the age of 7 in Baltimore. Initially afraid of the water, he joined a local club influenced by his sisters and motivated by high energy levels.

Seeing himself in Beckett, Michael acknowledged similarities like dealing with emotions. ‘He has a hard time turning the switch off, so when he gets angry, he gets angry,’ Phelps said, recalling his own experiences and suggesting a constructive outlet like swimming.
