Redwire’s SpaceMD to Pioneer Space-Based Drug Development with SpaceX Starfall

Redwire’s space-based pharmaceutical branch, SpaceMD, is set to advance drug development by utilizing microgravity to enhance drug potency. This initiative, achieved through acquiring the maiden operational flight of SpaceX Starfall, marks a novel direction in pharmaceuticals.
Space-manufactured drugs could become the first physical products produced beyond Earth. Until now, successful commercial space products have included Earth observation tools and satellite communications. The development of space-manufactured drugs has been ongoing, with experiments on the International Space Station and former shuttle missions.
SpaceMD’s employment of Starfall demonstrates progress toward creating treatments for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s in low Earth orbit. Starfall, initially launched on June 23 via a Falcon 9 test flight, can also deploy on Starship. This disk-shaped spacecraft measures around 2.5 feet in height, has a diameter of 10.2 feet, and weighs approximately 4,600 pounds, carrying about 2,200 pounds of cargo.
Structurally, Starfall consists of an aluminum top plate weighing nearly 3,090 pounds and a detachable carbon-fiber heat shield. The cargo occupies the top plate, and typical missions involve taking payloads, such as SpaceMD’s, to low Earth orbit. After completing its mission, the spacecraft reenters Earth’s atmosphere and splashes down into the ocean.
Scheduled for launch in 2028, the SpaceMD mission plans to carry up to 32 Pharmaceutical In-Space Laboratory units, known as PIL-BOX, aimed at developing improved drug formulations through microgravity-induced crystallization.
PIL-BOX has previously been tested on the ISS, but Starfall will significantly boost Redwire’s drug research capability within low Earth orbit. As per Tech Times, SpaceMD aims to process over 100 drug compounds per Starfall mission, surpassing the crystallization of 45 compounds achieved on the ISS, including insulin and candidates for cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes.
Crystallizing drugs in space eliminates gravitational and temperature differential disturbances, resulting in larger and more orderly drug crystals. The crystal structure is vital as it affects dissolution rates, solubility, and bioavailability, impacting how efficiently an active ingredient enters the bloodstream.
SpaceMD has inked a licensing deal with ExesaLibero Pharma for the development and clinical trial progression of drugs from these space-grown crystals. Each product ExesaLibero Pharma markets using SpaceMD’s crystals will earn Redwire royalties.
While specific treatments developed through space-manufactured drugs remain unknown, their potential could reduce conditions like cancer and Alzheimer’s, affecting millions annually. The National Cancer Institute estimates over 2.1 million cancer diagnoses by 2026, with 626,140 deaths. Additionally, the CDC predicts a doubling of Alzheimer’s cases by 2060.
Space activities have faced scrutiny in the past but are proving their value with tangible benefits.
