Dramatic Rescue from Berlin High-Rise Fire

A fierce fire erupted in a high-rise apartment building in Berlin’s Friedrichshain neighborhood early on Friday. The blaze began around 6:30 a.m., starting on the 11th floor and quickly spreading upwards, with visible flames and thick black smoke pouring from several windows.

Emergency responders faced significant challenges due to the magnitude of the situation. Berlin police highlighted the effort’s exigency, given the large number of people impacted and the fire’s scale.

A dramatic video captured a woman dressed in sweatpants navigating the narrow ledge of an 11th-floor apartment as flames and smoke surrounded her. She attempted to climb down to safety but struggled to find secure footing.

Rescue came via a firefighter positioned in the basket of a turntable ladder two floors below. After tense moments, she jumped into the basket and was safely caught. Although she suffered minor injuries, she was promptly taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police confirmed that the woman made a leap of approximately two stories to reach safety.

Overall, the fire affected 115 individuals. Twenty-five people were rescued or led to safety using fire-escape hoods and a turntable ladder. Thirteen people sustained minor injuries, and some were hospitalized for further care.

A substantial emergency response was mobilized, including eighteen fire engines, two aerial ladder trucks, nine ambulances, and more personnel. The fire’s cause remains under investigation.
