The Chicago Cubs experienced roster challenges before Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. These issues intensified when Dansby Swanson left the field after experiencing discomfort during the Cubs’ 11-4 loss. Swanson reported left-side tightness, and manager Craig Counsell indicated that the shortstop might need time on the injured list.
Swanson’s Potential Injury and Lineup Changes
Swanson commented on his condition after the game, stating, “We don’t really know anything yet.” The team plans to conduct imaging tests to assess the situation. In Swanson’s absence, rookie James Triantos filled in at second base while Nico Hoerner shifted to shortstop. Counsell confirmed Hoerner would continue as shortstop, and they might incorporate another rookie, Pedro Ramírez, to play second base.
The Cubs currently lack a backup first baseman following the trade deadline. This situation has made it necessary to explore options for providing relief to Michael Busch, who normally occupies the position.
“First base is a spot where we’re a little concerned about what’s next should something happen to Michael,” Counsell noted. “We need to get somebody… comfortable playing there should a need arise.”
Edward Cabrera’s Return and Performance Concerns
Edward Cabrera was activated from the injured list before the series finale, returning to the rotation. The Cubs had acquired the right-hander from the Miami Marlins, trading top prospects Owen Caissie and Cristian Hernández for him. His activation required sending Javier Assad to Iowa to maintain roster limits. Assad had been versatile but was one of the few pitchers with minor-league options available.
Cabrera struggled on his return, allowing seven earned runs, which increased his ERA to 5.68. He attributed these difficulties to a persistent blister on his right hand. Despite these challenges, he attempted to pitch through it but couldn’t maintain control in later innings.
Future Rotation Decisions
The Cubs face decisions regarding the rotation, considering Cabrera’s difficulties. Manager Counsell mentioned the need to evaluate whether Cabrera will start again. Other pitching options include David Peterson, who joined from the New York Mets and has performed reliably, and others like Assad and Colin Rea.
Cabrera addressed his blister issue, assuring that he does not plan to miss further starts due to it. However, persistent control problems present challenges for the Cubs’ rotation.
