Hakeem Jeffries Opposes Medicare for All and DSA Agenda
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York expressed opposition to Medicare for All and the Democratic Socialists of America’s (DSA) agenda, emphasizing a focus on health care affordability. Speaking on ‘Meet the Press,’ Jeffries stated that he does not support the Medicare for All legislation introduced in recent years. He highlighted the need to repair the current health care system and make it affordable for every American.
Jeffries has previously co-sponsored Medicare for All in 2019 and 2021 but distanced himself from the latest version. Acknowledging the DSA’s influence in securing his past support, he also backed Medicare X, a public-option proposal. The DSA’s new program advocates for universal health care, the abolition of ICE and the Senate, replacing certain government branches, and redirecting police funding.
Jeffries was asked about the place of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party. He rejected their agenda but recognized that candidates winning Democratic primaries, including democrats backed by the DSA, would be part of a broad House Democratic Caucus.
Rep. Ro Khanna of California, on the other hand, views Medicare for All as a crucial priority. Khanna called for a House vote on the policy if Democrats regain the majority, citing a Yale analysis that suggests a single-payer system could save significant health expenditures.
Jeffries’ position faced criticism, including from former host Mehdi Hasan, who claimed Jeffries is out of touch with the Democratic majority supporting Medicare for All. The DSA did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
