Humanoid robots that navigate tough terrains and detect people may soon assist federal agents at the U.S. southern border. A U.S. robotics company, Foundation, has shown this technology to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Company Engagement with Security Agencies
Sankaet Pathak, Foundation’s CEO, revealed that the company is engaged in discussions with multiple national security organizations including the Air Force, Navy, Army, and DHS. While talks progress, no formal agreements or contracts currently exist with DHS.
Capabilities and Potential Applications
Foundation’s Phantom robots are designed to conduct reconnaissance in areas difficult to access by other means, such as drones or vehicles. Pathak emphasized the robots’ ability to autonomously move across uneven terrain and identify humans among obstacles, filling gaps left by existing solutions.
“If drones and watchtowers were able to solve for everything, why do we still have humans at the border?” Pathak asked.
The robots could signal potential crossings for human officers to act upon. Pathak mentioned tunnels along the border as another possible use for these robots.
The company aims to enhance Phantom robots with waterproof and dustproof features for improved outdoor use. Pathak anticipates conducting pilot programs soon, with broader implementations to follow.
Robotic Surveillance and Future Possibilities
Currently focusing on surveillance, Foundation is open to arming robots if federal authorities request, but autonomous enforcement actions are not planned for the near future. The robots would alert human officers, who would then decide on subsequent actions.
Pathak stated that improved weather resistance is a target for the next Phantom model, which will be more suitable for outdoor ventures.
