U.S. Central Command Chief Visits USS Lincoln
The top U.S. military commander in the Middle East paid a visit to the USS Lincoln, an aircraft carrier stationed in the Arabian Sea. This visit was part of a regional tour that concluded recently. Adm. Brad Cooper, leading the U.S. Central Command, examined the ship’s condition amidst reports of mental health and supply challenges.
The USS Lincoln has been deployed in the Middle East since January and plays a pivotal role in supporting the U.S. conflict with Iran. The carrier has been at sea for over 240 days, setting a new record for uninterrupted deployment. Concerns have arisen over the extended deployment of such carriers, given they host over 5,000 personnel.
Adm. Cooper extended his visit to Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, engaging with both civilian and military leaders.
Iran-U.S. Negotiations and Strait of Hormuz
The U.S. Navy’s blockade in response to Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz continues. This waterway previously facilitated the passage of around one-fifth of the world’s traded oil and natural gas. Talks between the U.S. and Iran have stalled, with Iran engaging Oman regarding the strait’s management.
Hamas Delegation in Cairo for Ceasefire Talks
A delegation from Hamas, led by Khalil al-Hayya, met Egyptian officials in Cairo. Discussions focused on ceasefire-related matters, aligning with efforts to implement the U.S. peace plan for Gaza. Al-Hayya communicated Hamas’ support for this plan, aimed at alleviating Gaza’s suffering and initiating reconstruction.
Mediators are advocating a path that involves Hamas and other militant groups disarming, Israeli forces withdrawing, and power transitioning to Palestinian technocrats. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes withdrawing from territory until Hamas fully disarms.
Meanwhile, U.S. negotiator Jared Kushner met with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, emphasizing the adherence to ceasefire agreements.
Israel Strikes Hezbollah Commanders
Israel conducted military strikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, targeting two of its commanders. These actions led to significant casualties, the most since a truce took effect between Israel and Hezbollah.
Israel’s military identified the commanders as Abu Hassan Alaa and Ali Samir Al-Haj Hassan. Despite a framework agreement for Israeli withdrawal in exchange for Hezbollah’s disarmament, Hezbollah remains uncooperative.
Iran Accuses Qatar of Holding Pilots
Iran accused Qatar of detaining three of its pilots from March, a claim denied by Qatar. Iran has sought permission for its Air Force experts to investigate this incident on Qatari soil.
This marks the first instance Iran claims a regional nation is holding its fighters amid the ongoing conflict.
Israeli Strike in Gaza Wounds Five
An Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, resulted in injuries to five individuals, including a seriously injured child. This incident follows prior airstrikes amid ongoing tensions, despite a ceasefire with Hamas since October. Israeli forces continue operations, which the Gaza Health Ministry reports have resulted in numerous casualties.
