On August 17, 2026, CBS News reported a notable event taking place in Washington. Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old lifeguard, and Nathaniel Rai, a 10-year-old boy he rescued from a rip current in Santa Cruz, California, received recognition during a visit to the Oval Office with President Trump.
Williams gained widespread attention following the dramatic rescue of Nathaniel on July 25. The boy was caught in a dangerous surf while Williams managed to hold on to him, aiming to guide him back to the shore as powerful waves surged around them. President Trump commended Williams for his act of bravery and congratulated Nathaniel on his survival in the perilous situation.
“We’re honored to have all of you. And again, what you did was incredible,” President Trump remarked to Williams. “And everybody saw it. And you’d watch it over and over. I know when I first saw it, I said, ‘Roll that back, I want to see that again. Is that really happening?'”
Sumit Rai, Nathaniel’s father, was present at the Oval Office ceremony, where he expressed his profound gratitude toward Ryder for saving his son’s life. He stated he was “beyond grateful” that his family could celebrate Nathaniel’s upcoming 11th birthday. Rai had mentioned earlier on “CBS Mornings” that his son was “a second or two away from dying” when Williams intervened.
President Trump also highlighted the often unacknowledged importance of lifeguards. He noted, “Maybe lifeguards don’t get the credit they deserve.”
Williams reflected on his experience, stating that lifeguards rely on their training to handle such dangerous situations. He shared his aspiration to become a firefighter in the future.
