An American tourist died after being struck by lightning while hiking on Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy. The incident occurred following a period of intense volcanic activity.
The 29-year-old man, originally from Kansas, was hiking on Europe’s largest volcano when the tragic event took place on Sunday evening. Italian firefighters reported that he was in an exposed and barren area at an elevation of about 4,600 feet in the Rocca Capra region.
Despite a helicopter rescue, medical personnel declared him dead. Authorities have chosen not to release his name.
Volcanic activity on Mount Etna has caused significant disruptions recently. Officials closed parts of the volcano’s slope to hikers due to the prolonged activity. This activity also led to the closure of the airport in nearby Catania for most of the previous week. It remains uncertain if the man was in a restricted area at the time of the lightning strike.
In recent decades, more fatalities on Mount Etna have resulted from lightning strikes rather than volcanic eruptions. The last deaths directly related to eruptions occurred in 1987.
