Shakira, the Colombian music superstar, announced her commitment to reconstructing at least 10 schools and restoring a university in Chocó, Colombia. This follows a powerful earthquake that recently devastated the region, killing hundreds and impacting thousands of educational sites. Shakira made this pledge during a surprise visit to Quibdó, Chocó’s capital, where she toured damaged schools and engaged with students.
“What worries me the most is that schools are not rebuilt once this emergency is over.”
Alongside philanthropist Howard Buffett, Shakira’s efforts will be supported by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and her own Fundación Pies Descalzos. They aim to reconstruct 10 schools.
Various organizations have pledged funds, including $500,000 each from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund and Live Nation, and $250,000 from the CAF Development Bank.
The earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, reaching a magnitude of 7.4. It resulted in at least 287 deaths and destruction of more than 26,000 homes. Official data reported that 194 people remain missing, but civilian databases suggest over 4,100. Chocó’s harsh terrain, limited communication, and infrastructure make relief efforts challenging.
Shakira expressed her love for the region, where her foundation has operated for over two decades. Chocó faces severe poverty, inhabited largely by Indigenous and Afro Colombian communities.
During her visit, Shakira stated that while no immediate solutions exist, a commitment to support Chocó is vital. She emphasized the need for children to return to school and dream of a better future.
Shakira has a longstanding dedication to educational causes and continues to perform at high-profile events, like the World Cup and a concert in Brazil. Other artists are joining her efforts, with a Miami concert raising funds for Colombia’s and Venezuela’s earthquake relief.
Shakira’s dedication to rebuilding schools, rather than constructing new ones, demonstrates her focused approach to recovery and support for affected communities.
