COVID-19 is seeing a resurgence in almost every part of the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that infections are increasing or likely to increase in 50 states as of mid-August. Although the spread is widespread, instances of severe illness remain infrequent. Visits to emergency departments due to COVID-19 are reported to be low.
The CDC’s epidemic trend tracking indicates that COVID-19 is either growing or expected to grow across the country, except for Iowa, where no estimate is available. Wastewater data provides insights into the virus’s prevalence, showing that COVID-19 can be detected through sewage even in individuals without symptoms. This data is particularly helpful in pinpointing areas where the virus may be circulating unnoticed by the traditional healthcare system.
Currently, Hawaii and Mississippi are identified as having moderate levels of COVID-19, though the data from Mississippi is somewhat limited. The western and southern regions of the U.S. are experiencing higher levels of viral activity. States like Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Nevada, Texas, and Washington report low levels of COVID-19 in wastewater. Other states show very low levels.
In addition to COVID-19, the CDC also monitors the presence of influenza and RSV in wastewater. Both viruses appear less frequently than COVID-19. An updated COVID-19 vaccine focusing on the prevalent XFG variant is anticipated to be available in the fall.
