In northern Germany’s Dodau Forest, there’s a unique romantic tradition involving a tree known as the Bridegroom’s Oak, or ‘Bräutigamseiche’. This oak, standing tall at 25 meters (82 feet), has a storied history reaching back over a century. It has a special role in connecting people seeking love.
Instead of swiping on apps like Tinder, lovers have been posting letters in a knothole in this tree since 1892. The tree even has its postal code, making it a distinctive attraction about 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of Berlin.
The process involves mail carriers from the German postal service, who play matchmaker by delivering 50 to 60 letters to the tree monthly. They use a ladder to access the knothole located 3 meters (10 feet) up the ancient tree. Visitors are welcome to read these letters, some even coming from distant continents. They decide if they wish to connect with any of the letter writers.
Remarkably, some pen pal relationships have developed into marriages. The history of the tree traces back to a forester’s daughter and a chocolate manufacturer from Leipzig. Due to initial opposition from the forester, the couple exchanged their love letters via the knothole. Eventually, they married under this very oak in 1892, once they gained the forester’s approval.
“The resulting pen pal relationships have even led to a few marriages.”
For those wishing to participate in this charming tradition, they can send a love letter to the address: Bräutigamseiche, Dodauer Forst, 23701 Eutin, Germany.
