Son of Chiefs Coordinator Accused in Mother’s Shooting
Elijah Bieniemy, the son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, faces serious charges following an incident involving his mother, Mia Bieniemy. The shooting took place in Ashburn, Virginia, and left Mia with multiple gunshot wounds. She is now in stable condition.
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid has offered support to the Bieniemy family during this difficult time. Eric Bieniemy left his position with the team shortly after the incident to be with his wife and family. Elijah, 27, is accused of malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. His court proceedings are delayed pending a mental health evaluation.
Eric Bieniemy, who was with the Washington Commanders in the 2023 season, remained engaged with the Chiefs while taking care of his family. He attended team meetings remotely and kept up with practices from Missouri Western State University.
After returning to Kansas City before the preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, Eric said Mia, who encouraged his return, was on a great road to recovery. He mentioned, “She’s truly a soldier. She’s a saint. And it’s been incredible to watch.”
Bieniemy expressed gratitude for the Chiefs’ support, stating, “I’d like to say thank you to the Hunt family, the entire Chiefs family for the outpouring, the love and support that my family has received through this particular situation.”
During his absence, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach assisted in maintaining communication. Bieniemy kept close tabs on the team, even addressing specific coaching details over the phone.
Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton welcomed Eric Bieniemy’s return, highlighting his competitive spirit and the positive impact on the team. Bieniemy’s return was marked by continued efforts in setting a foundation for the Chiefs’ success.
