Gilbert Wins Democratic Primary in Florida’s 24th District
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert emerged victorious in the Democratic primary to succeed retiring Rep. Frederica Wilson in Florida’s 24th Congressional District. This district, which covers part of Miami, remains a Democratic stronghold despite recent redistricting efforts by Florida Republicans. These changes included shifting areas like Miami Beach to a neighboring district.
Rep. Frederica Wilson, who has served in Congress since 2011, initially represented Florida’s 17th Congressional District for a single term before transitioning to the 24th following redistricting. She is well known for her colorful and distinctive hats, a staple in her wardrobe both inside and outside the U.S. Capitol. Wilson endorsed Oliver Gilbert during his campaign, highlighting his candidacy at rallies and encouraging voters in District 24 to support him.
While the Democratic primary for Wilson’s seat was competitive, it was not characterized by the stark division between establishment Democrats and the far-left that has become prevalent in the 2026 midterm election season. Across the country, far-left candidates, many associated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), have challenged more moderate incumbents. For instance, in Florida, DSA member Oliver Larkin took on moderate Rep. Jared Moskowitz in a Republican-favored district.
Another example involved Elijah Manley, a socialist contender, running against Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., after her district was altered by the new Republican-backed congressional map. Wasserman Schultz, running in a majority-Black district, secured a win despite these changes.
