At least 14 people were killed on Sunday after a bomb exploded near a passenger train in southwestern Pakistan, according to local officials. This is the latest incident in an area affected by a long-running separatist insurgency.
The explosion occurred around 8 a.m. near a railway crossing in Balochistan Province, close to the Afghan border. The region hosts numerous militant groups that have intensified violent activities recently.
The bomb detonated as a train carrying many passengers, some from a nearby military base, was en route to Quetta’s main railway station. The force of the explosion derailed the locomotive and overturned at least three coaches, based on statements by Pakistan’s railway minister, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi.
Many passengers were likely traveling to celebrate Eid al-Adha, a significant event in Pakistan. The train was set to connect with the Jaffer Express, a crucial rail link between Quetta and major Pakistani cities.
Shahid Rind, a provincial government official, confirmed 14 fatalities. A police officer and a health department official in Quetta, both speaking confidentially, reported that over 20 bodies, including women and children, were taken to a hospital, with more than three dozen people injured.
Preliminary investigations suggest the possibility of a suicide attack, though a formal assessment by a bomb disposal squad is pending.
