When the LIV Golf league began in 2022, Sam Burns chose to remain with the PGA Tour. He didn’t blame those who left for LIV. Now facing an uncertain future, Burns expressed in an exclusive interview with OutKick his openness to welcoming back players like Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau to the PGA Tour.
“I think it’s best for the game of golf as a whole,” Burns said. “As a competitor, you want to face the best players every week.” Burns is optimistic that a path back exists for those players. “Ultimately, I think there will be a path back for those guys,” Burns added. “I don’t exactly know what it’ll look like.”
Burns, ranked No. 7 globally, discussed the split during a promotional event with Raising Cane’s at The Highlands Golf & Tennis in Forest Park. He fully supports the PGA Tour and clarified any rumors about his potential move to LIV, stating, “It was a pretty easy decision for me.” While firmly supportive of the PGA Tour, Burns doesn’t criticize those who chose to leave. “I don’t really fault anyone for the decision to go play another tour,” he commented.
Reflecting on different life experiences and circumstances, Burns understands that others might make decisions he disagrees with but avoids judging them. “I think everyone has the freedom to choose their path. Sometimes we make decisions, and it doesn’t pan out,” he said.
The PGA Tour implemented a one-time Returning Member Program in 2026, with financial penalties for those who left for LIV. Brooks Koepka returned under this program, facing significant hurdles. Though this program has ended and no clear path exists for future returnees, Burns reiterates the importance of top golfers competing together.
LIV Golf undergoes its own changes after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund plans to withdraw support post-2026. CEO Scott O’Neil announced a new investor agreement, though uncertainty remains.
“A lot of the LIV stuff is kind of up in the air right now,” said Burns, admitting the complexity of future policies on returning players. Looking ahead, Burns hopes for unity in golf. “I think ultimately you’ll see those guys back,” he stated. “As a fan of golf, I think it’s great for our game.”
