In the late 2010s, Dabo Swinney stood as a formidable rival to Nick Saban. Leading the Clemson Tigers, Swinney reached four national championships over five years, clinching victories in the 2016 and 2018 seasons. The 2024 season saw Clemson in the College Football Playoff, maintaining their competitive edge.
However, The Athletic’s recent rankings reflect a concern. Swinney’s position dropped after a difficult 2025 season. Despite starting the season ranked No. 4, and with quarterback Cade Klubnik a favored Heisman contender, the team’s performance faltered. Clemson lost three of their first four games to LSU, Georgia Tech, and Syracuse, ending up with a 3-5 record before securing four consecutive wins to reach a bowl game, where they lost to Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl.
Examining Clemson’s trajectory over the past decade reveals a shift. The Tigers, who once only lost one or two games per season, started losing two or three, then four, and last season, six. Chris Vannini of The Athletic observed this, suggesting the trend might persist. “Dabo Swinney drops out of the top tier for the first time since this exercise began. He has two national titles, but the last one was eight years ago,” he commented. “The Tigers have one CFP appearance in the last five years, and last season’s 7-6 record was Swinney’s worst since 2010. You can’t deny the highs, but the Tigers aren’t close to the bar he set and are trending downward.”
Adding to Clemson’s struggles is the success of Brent Venables, Swinney’s former defensive coordinator, who led the Oklahoma Sooners to a CFP appearance last year. Although the Sooners lost a significant lead to Alabama, quarterback John Mateer and his team maintain optimism in Norman, contrasting with the current mood in Clemson.
This season begins without a ranking for the Tigers, a first in 15 years. Nick Saban remarked on “The Pat McAfee Show,” “I think we’ll see if they’re back. I know they’ve got a lot of question marks too, whether it’s quarterback, and they got a lot of holes to fill. I mean, everybody thought they were going to be, you know, the class of the town last year, and it just completely disintegrated on them.” If this decline continues, Swinney’s standing in college football could face further challenges.
