Sophie Cunningham, a guard for the Indiana Fever, made her debut in Canada on Tuesday night, specifically in Toronto. Her visit marked her first time in the country. During the game, she faced a significant amount of booing each time she handled the basketball. This reaction was likely due to her previous comments about men’s presence in girls’ locker rooms.
Despite the negative reception, Cunningham performed exceptionally well by scoring all three of her three-point attempts, contributing to the Fever’s 101-95 win. After the game, she took a moment to acknowledge the local audience. ‘I want to shout out the Tempo crowd and the city,’ she expressed. ‘We’ve had so much fun. The crowd was absolutely amazing. I think that’s what sports is all about. You’re going to get boos and you’re going to get cheers.’
Cunningham, who is known for her candid nature, shared her perspective: ‘The Big Three are going to do their thing every night. Like I said, I’m just gonna come, have some fun, maybe inspire some young girls to come beat me one day.’
The strong crowd reaction stemmed from comments Cunningham made in an ESPN interview a month prior. She addressed misconceptions about her views, saying, ‘I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’ I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.’
This statement triggered a heated response, including booing from the Toronto Tempo crowd. It also led to a visible protest, such as a Minnesota coach wearing a ‘Trans Kids Belong’ shirt during a previous game against the Fever.
