Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike, a prominent figure in the WNBA, announced her retirement at the end of this season. Her illustrious career spans 15 years, marking her as one of the most accomplished players in the league’s history.
Ogwumike, 36, shared her decision on Wednesday during an interview with Boardroom Talks. “I feel very fulfilled with the 15 years that I’ve been able to play and compete at such a high level,” she stated. Despite initially being uncertain about her potential in the league, her career longevity and impact have exceeded her expectations.
Selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft from Stanford, Ogwumike quickly made her mark, earning Rookie of the Year honors with the Sparks. She achieved her highest accolade in 2016 when she was named the league MVP while leading the Sparks to a WNBA championship.
“Nneka has always led with a rare combination of strength, purpose, and grace,” said former teammate Alana Beard. “For 15 seasons, we’ve watched her give everything to this game, not only as an elite competitor but as a leader who has helped shape the league and lift up the people around her.”
This season, Ogwumike was selected for the All-Star Game for the 11th time and maintained an average of nearly 17 points per game. Reflecting on her decision, she cited a combination of physical readiness and a readiness to slow down.
“I still feel very good,” Ogwumike mentioned, “But I also feel the comfort of slowing down a little bit. I just feel content with where I’ve left my career.” She emphasized the completion she feels after pouring so much into the game throughout her career.
Outside of her on-court contributions, Ogwumike has played a significant role in advancing women’s basketball. As president of the WNBPA, she has been instrumental in negotiating a transformative collective bargaining agreement.
WNBPA executive director Terri Carmichael Jackson acclaimed Ogwumike’s unwavering leadership, stating, “She has served this union with a level of commitment, courage, integrity, and purpose that is truly unparalleled.” Ogwumike’s focus was not only on leadership roles but also on using her position to advance the league for all players both now and in the future.
