Céline Dion has shared details about her long-hidden health struggle before receiving a crucial diagnosis. At 58, the singer was featured on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Global Icons issue, where she disclosed her experience with stiff-person syndrome. She endured symptoms for 17 years before being diagnosed in August 2022.
Understanding Stiff-Person Syndrome
Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurological disorder. It causes severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms. Dion explained the condition as progressive, and during the interview, she voiced her preference to avoid calling it a disease. She dealt with debilitating symptoms, sometimes using high doses of Valium to cope, according to Harper’s Bazaar.
The Impact on Dion’s Career
Over the years, Dion canceled shows, initially attributing them to minor ailments like sinus infections. Her health issues became more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fearful of public scrutiny over her cancellations, Dion largely stayed out of the public eye.
In December 2022, Dion publicly shared her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis via a heartfelt Instagram video. She mentioned that the spasms had been affecting all facets of her daily life, hindering her ability to perform and walk.
Managing the Condition
Following the diagnosis, Dion postponed and canceled several concerts, including all remaining shows in her Courage World Tour for 2023 and 2024. She engaged in an intensive rehabilitation program, incorporating medication, physical and vocal therapy, and immunotherapy to manage the condition.
Dion’s Gradual Return to the Spotlight
As her treatment advanced, Dion began making public appearances. In February 2024, she attended the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, making her first on-stage appearance since 2020. That summer, she promoted her documentary “I Am: Céline Dion,” and attended its New York premiere.
A thrilling milestone came when Dion performed at the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony. She sang “Hymne à l’amour” from the Eiffel Tower.
Upcoming Performances and Recovery Efforts
In November 2024, Dion performed at Elie Saab’s 1001 Seasons fashion show in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. For her 58th birthday, she announced a five-week Paris residency starting in September. In preparation, she has integrated Pilates and ballet classes into her regimen.
Dion expressed excitement and gratitude toward her fans, eager to reconnect with them during her performances. “It’s been so long,” Dion said, highlighting her anticipation to reunite with her audience and express how much they mean to her.
