An express train accident in Japan led to the deaths of four workers, according to Tochigi prefectural police. The incident occurred at Shin-Kanuma Station, north of Tokyo, involving the Tokyo-bound Spacia express train on the Tobu Nikko Line.
The tragic event unfolded as the train came into contact with four individuals engaged in weed-control work on the railway tracks. The victims, identified as three workers and a supervisor, were rushed to a hospital but were later pronounced dead, officials reported.
Six others present at the site avoided harm, including two workers, three lookout personnel, and an on-site supervisor. This team was tasked with spraying herbicide along the tracks. Notably, the train carried about 50 passengers, all of whom remained unharmed.
Uncertainty surrounds the reasons why the workers did not leave as the train approached or the role of the lookout personnel at the time. Tobu Railway Co. stated their commitment to assisting the investigative efforts to determine the accident’s cause.
Lookout personnel play a critical role by warning others of an incoming train, thereby facilitating evacuation. This involves waving a flag to signal the train, prompting the driver to sound the horn in acknowledgment and proceed with care. Initial discussions hinted at possible communication failures, but the complete details of the incident are still being reviewed, according to Tobu officials.
Japan’s train system holds a reputation for safety and precision, making fatal train accidents uncommon. Takao Suzuki, head of Tobu’s railway business division, expressed remorse over the incident, emphasizing the commitment to implementing preventive measures to avoid future occurrences.
Following the accident, services on the line were halted for several hours, but operations resumed later the same day, officials confirmed.
