Relief Effort in Gary After Severe Storms
On Monday, food influencer and philanthropist Keith Lee joined forces with the Salvation Army and the city of Gary to launch a large-scale relief effort in northwest Indiana. Residents had been without power for two weeks after historic weather events. Severe storms with winds up to 100 mph and a derecho swept through the area on August 11, wreaking havoc with uprooted sidewalks, non-functioning streetlights, snapped trees, and scattered debris.
Keith Lee’s Involvement
Keith Lee, originally from Detroit and now residing in Texas, gained fame for his straightforward food reviews. On Friday, he announced the partnership in a social media video, explaining that his team was initially planning a food tour and festival. The plans changed swiftly when he learned about the dire situation in Gary. Lee told the Tribune during the relief event that they shifted focus to help the city.
With a substantial social media following including 17 million TikTok followers, Lee’s presence was impactful. His previous food reviews have led to significant exposure for local restaurants, boosting their customer base and social media presence.
Relief Event and Community Support
Residents participated in the event at Roosevelt High School, receiving one of 2,000 relief kits distributed. The kits contained cleaning supplies, liquid disinfectants, gloves, N95 masks, and trash bags. Volunteers also handed out sandwiches, chips, and drinks. Lee donated $15,000 for the relief efforts, matched by Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton.
The community event also doubled as a festival with food trucks, a live DJ, and music. Sylvia Martin, director of planning and zoning in Gary, noted that the lineup of vendors was organized rapidly. This gathering was unique because it offered essential relief mixed with joy and entertainment.
Community Spirit and Resilience
Local vendors like Marshawna Kendrick of Pineapple Paradise served food, contributing to the relief effort. Despite challenges, Gary residents demonstrated resilience by collectively organizing and supporting the community. Many faced extended power outages, and some like Christine Jones felt racial disparities in the restoration efforts.
NIPSCO, the local power supplier, aims to restore power substantially by Tuesday after repairing hundreds of poles. Residents struggled with daily needs like candles and matches, and many had to travel to nearby cities for essentials.
Community and Volunteer Involvement
The ongoing relief efforts included a day shelter run by YWCA Northwest Indiana, providing residents with showers, phone charging stations, and food. Volunteers and city organizers faced the same hardships as the community during this time.
Dora Rogers, a Gary resident, emphasized the importance of Lee’s influence and visibility. His social media prominence brought attention to Gary and the storm’s impact. The community’s backbone was demonstrated through the coordinated efforts and mutual support.
