The Trump administration is preparing to revoke business and tourist visas from up to 200,000 foreigners who have applied for asylum in the U.S., according to reports. The State Department is expected to announce this action soon, following information from internal documents and U.S. officials reported by The Associated Press.
This initiative targets B1 and B2 visas issued from 2016 to 2026 to individuals who later sought asylum status. If executed, this would represent the largest mass visa revocation in American history and could encounter legal challenges.
Foreign drunk drivers might face swift deportation under Trump’s ‘America First’ policy.
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott stated that coordination is underway with the Department of Homeland Security to identify and revoke visas from foreigners who claimed to be short-term visitors but later applied for asylum to remain in the U.S. Pigott did not disclose the exact numbers affected, explaining that revocations would happen progressively and remain “dynamic.” This action would not lead to immediate deportations; those with pending asylum applications would be reclassified, losing their business or tourist status.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau emphasized the misuse of asylum applications to circumvent immigration law. Landau expressed widespread irritation with false asylum claims via social media.
B1 visas are typically issued for business purposes while B2 visas cover tourism, family visits, or medical care. Applicants must prove intentions to return to their home countries.
The visa revocations come amidst the Trump administration’s efforts to address what it perceives as immigration system abuse. Over the last 18 months, the State Department has revoked approximately 175,000 visas, as cited by The Associated Press.
