Historical Events in Chicago on August 25
The Demolition of Heinrich Rincker’s Landmark House
On August 25, 1980, the 129-year-old farmhouse of German immigrant Heinrich W. Rincker was demolished at the intersection of Devon, Milwaukee, and Nagle avenues in Chicago. Despite its landmark status, the demolition was executed by the Cirro Wrecking Co., which claimed address confusion as the cause. Alderman Roman Pucinski noted that no demolition records had been filed, and efforts were made to retain the structure on the city’s landmark roll. The building owner, Anthony Roppolo, pursued development plans for the site, which faced opposition from residents and city council members. This incident highlighted flaws in preservation efforts, including inadequate penalties and detection mechanisms. A plaque now marks the site’s history.
Weather Records
The National Weather Service recorded notable weather figures for Chicago on August 25. The highest temperature was 95 degrees in 2003, and the lowest was 47 degrees in 1917. Precipitation was 1.88 inches in 1972, with trace snowfall noted back in 1941.
Historical Sports Highlights
On August 25, 1922, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in a baseball game noted for its high scoring. With a final score of 26-23, it remains the highest-scoring game in Major League Baseball history. The Cubs scored all their runs in four innings.
The Arlington Million Event
In 1985, over 35,000 fans attended the Arlington Million at Arlington Park, despite a devastating fire less than a month prior. The race saw Great Britain’s Teleprompter triumph over Greinton. The organizers received an Eclipse Award for their efforts to host the event shortly after the fire.
Kenosha Shooting Incident
On August 25, 2020, amid protests in Kenosha, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse opened fire, killing two individuals and injuring a third with an AR-15-style rifle. Rittenhouse was later acquitted of all charges, with a jury finding that he acted in self-defense during the confrontations.
Chicago White Sox No-Hitter
In another event in 2020, Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito pitched a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Striking out 13 and walking only one, Giolito’s performance marked the 19th no-hitter in White Sox history, further cementing the team’s reputation in the American League.
