GOP Chair Calls for Republican Support in California
Roxanne Hoge, Chair of the Los Angeles County GOP, is calling for Republicans to assist in California, emphasizing what she views as widespread corruption in the state. She argues many people can’t grasp the extent of the control exerted over everyday life there.
Hoge provided her insights during an interview with Fox News Digital, responding to the online criticism of a viral video posted by Mayor Karen Bass. In the video, Bass declared that donations to her re-election campaign would be matched six times by the city government. While some expressed surprise, Hoge found it predictable.
“The rest of the country doesn’t understand what we’re living under here,” she remarked in her conversation with Fox News Digital.
Hoge explained that the rules in California are designed to legalize questionable practices in the election process. She referenced the plans to allow noncitizens to vote in local elections, which faced backlash online.
Mayor Bass, a 72-year-old progressive leader, stated in a social media post that every dollar donated could become $35 due to LA’s super match program. She cited needing these funds after Republican challenger Spencer Pratt gained substantial support in the primary.
Social media users reacted critically to Bass’ comments. Billboard Chris, a conservative activist, questioned the legality of using taxpayer money for election campaigns. Political commentator Matt Van Swol asked for clarification on the program’s legality. Author Michael Shellenberger labeled it as “grotesque.”
Additionally, Dr. Houman David Hemmati criticized the program, expressing concern about taxpayers funding campaign contributions instead of public services.
Hoge clarified that the matching-funds initiative is legal under city law. In 1990, voters approved a public campaign-financing system, later expanded to match donations six to one. Donations must adhere to certain limits and requirements.
“Voters passed something that sounded beneficial at first … and it evolved into placing a significant burden on taxpayers,” Hoge noted.
She mentioned the system applies to various campaigns, including the City Council, where multiple Democratic Socialists of America members are involved.
Hoge believes Mayor Bass’ message underscores a long-standing sentiment within California, cautioning against challenging city authorities. She cited Spencer Pratt’s mayoral campaign advocating for rational governance as a threat to the status quo.
Fox News Digital contacted Bass’ office for comments.
Hoge made a strong case for Republicans to persevere in California despite its political situation. California, with its natural beauty, remains worth fighting for, she said.
“California is a place where individuals should feel free to pursue personal aspirations and autonomy. That’s the key point people must not forget,” Hoge added, urging Republican support.
