A political newcomer has made waves in Oklahoma, winning the Democratic Senate nomination with plans to impeach President Donald Trump if elected. N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, a nurse stepping into politics for the first time, bested Jim Priest in the runoff race.
Thomas achieved a remarkable feat as she garnered the highest percentage of votes in the primary election that had five candidates. Her victory sets the stage for a battle against history, as Oklahoma has not sent a Democrat to the Senate in over 30 years.
Thomas’s Campaign Platform
Thomas lists several policy proposals on her campaign website. They include increasing teacher pay and expanding Obamacare. However, her primary goal in the early days of her Senate career would be to impeach Trump.
In a recent interview, Thomas expressed her commitment to this aim. She stated, “I am kind, not nice. I will work diligently to impeach, remove, and convict.” She emphasized her determination to proceed with the impeachment process within her first 100 days in office.
The Upcoming Election Challenge
Thomas faces a tough challenge in the upcoming election against Rep. Kevin Hern, a staunch supporter of Trump. Hern is well-funded, with a campaign war chest nearing $10 million, while Thomas has raised just under $60,000.
Hern, who has received Trump’s endorsement, aims to advance the president’s agenda through the SAVE America Act. He believes that Oklahomans strongly support Trump’s policies, underscoring the challenge Thomas will face on Election Night.
Thomas’s candidacy represents a significant moment in Oklahoma politics. Her ability to overcome the longstanding Republican dominance in the state remains to be seen.
