A recent runoff election in South Carolina has resulted in a surprising win for Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C., a candidate with a powerful endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Graham defeated Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., in a bid to replace her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, as the GOP nominee for the Senate following his death in July.
Less than five months after Lindsey Graham’s passing at the age of 71, voters in South Carolina chose to remain with a familiar name. Despite limited political experience, Darline Graham received Trump’s endorsement, a key factor in her victory.
“Darline Graham faces a crucial runoff in her quest to retain her brother’s Senate seat,” remarked Sean Rayford. At a campaign event in Florence, S.C., on August 19, 2026, Graham fielded questions from attendees.
Initially appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to serve the remainder of her brother’s term, Graham’s candidacy was encouraged by Trump to extend beyond the temporary assignment. Trump emphasized his longstanding relationship with her and highlighted her potential as a leader during a rally in Myrtle Beach.
“Darline is somebody I’ve known for a long time,” Trump stated. “I asked her to do this because everyone loves and respects her. I’ve known her through Lindsey, and I think Lindsey respected Darline more than anyone, including me.”
Although Graham admitted to having a limited understanding of national security issues, particularly concerning Taiwan, during her debate with Norman, Trump’s financial support bolstered her campaign. Trump contributed over $800,000 from his substantial campaign funds to a phone campaign in favor of Graham.
Graham has distinguished herself from her brother by prioritizing domestic issues over international matters. She consistently aligned her platform with the Trump agenda during debates and campaign events, portraying her candidacy as a continuation of those policies.
During the runoff, Graham criticized Norman’s opposition to House Republican leadership and, at times, Trump himself. “We already have enough problem Democrats, we don’t need a problem Republican,” she asserted.
Despite her brief tenure in the Senate, Graham highlighted her accomplishments, including passing a bipartisan Russia sanctions package and confirming Trump’s attorney general nominee, Todd Blanche.
“I was in Washington for only two weeks before I passed the Russia and Iran Sanctions Act through the Senate,” Graham stated. “I then cast the deciding vote to confirm President Trump’s attorney general, Todd Blanche. Simply put, I’ve done more in 20 days than Ralph Norman has done in 20 years.”
