Florida Driver Arrested After Crashing Into School Bus
A driver in Florida was arrested after a serious incident involving a school bus. The driver, identified as Qahiem Williams, allegedly fled from a traffic stop and collided head-on with a school bus carrying 19 children. Fortunately, all the children were unharmed in the accident.
The incident occurred on a Tuesday morning around 7:20 a.m. A deputy conducting traffic enforcement near The Villages Intermediate Center noticed Williams driving 17 mph over the speed limit. When the deputy attempted to stop him, Williams reportedly increased speed and sideswiped two vehicles at a traffic light.
The collisions with the other vehicles caused significant damage to the axle of Williams’ car. Subsequently, this led to the vehicle colliding head-on with a school bus on County Road 103. Internal bus video captured the moment of impact, and the driver’s side door of Williams’ vehicle was seen opening just before the crash.
After the collision, Williams is said to have exited his vehicle and fled on foot. A deputy chased and apprehended him near a Walmart. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage of the pursuit and arrest.
Williams faces several charges, including fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, and hit-and-run. He also had two outstanding warrants in Sumter County for similar offenses.
Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden expressed his outrage over the incident, emphasizing the danger posed to the children’s safety. “I have zero tolerance when it comes to actions that put our children’s lives in danger,” Breeden stated. “This suspect has a history of this type of behavior and our community is safer with him off our streets,” he added.
Williams was medically evaluated before being taken to the Sumter County Detention Center, where he remains without bond.
