Jonathan Kuminga made headlines in the NBA free agency when he decided to join the Minnesota Timberwolves. His new contract is a two-year, $12.4 million agreement, which includes a player option for the second year. NBA insider Shams Charania reports the news, and the decision surprised many, as it was not what most had expected.
Kuminga had several offers, notably from the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers provided an attractive proposition with similar financial terms and a potential starting role. However, as informed by insiders to Charania, Kuminga opted for the Timberwolves to gain more control over his future. ESPN’s Anthony Slater detailed that the shorter-term, prove-it deal allows Kuminga to potentially return to free agency next summer.
The forward also had interest from the Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers. Yet, the Timberwolves presented a promising opportunity with a revamped roster, featuring Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels, and newly acquired point guard LaMelo Ball. This new lineup is viewed as a substantial threat in the race for an NBA title this season.
Kuminga is anticipated to start as the power forward, stepping in to replace Julius Randle and Naz Reid. According to reports by Jon Krawczynski and Sam Amick, this role is expected to be a better match for the team dynamics. Known for being ‘persistently recruited,’ Kuminga received significant endorsement from Anthony Edwards and even had a personal meeting with team president Tim Connelly and established communication with coach Chris Finch.
Still just 23, Kuminga aligns perfectly with the Timberwolves’ youthful core, including Edwards, Ball, and McDaniels, all aged 25. If these young players manage to work well together, the Timberwolves could emerge as a formidable force in the Western Conference. Otherwise, unexpected developments could arise.
