As a freshman, Katy Zumerchik of Stagg High School faced challenges including a position switch from middle hitter to outside. Her growth spurt added to the difficulty, causing knee issues. “I had Osgood-Schlatter syndrome,” she explained about a condition affecting her performance. However, she persevered, saying, “I worked through it.”
Currently a junior, Zumerchik excelled in a recent match, contributing 13 kills and two aces in Stagg’s 25-12, 25-15 win over Tinley Park. Her performance thrilled fans and demonstrated her growth as a player. Team adjustments included Nicole Maka moving to the middle due to Amelia Kadamus’s ankle injury. Stagg hopes Kadamus recovers soon.
Sarah Aggen led Tinley Park with five kills, while Grace Samborski added two aces. Reflecting on her youth, Zumerchik recalled, “I tried out for everything,” listing sports and activities before choosing volleyball as her main focus. Her dedication paid off. She amassed 23 kills in early-season victories, prompting teammate Maka to praise her reliability on the court.
Stagg’s coach, Erin Moran, in her first year, praised the team’s chemistry and potential. Previously successful as an assistant coach at Sandburg, Moran highlighted Zumerchik’s versatility, affecting both front and back rows. Zumerchik was a standout in middle school, winning MVP awards.
Peggy Clemens, now coaching at Lemont, recognized Zumerchik’s potential in the early days. Zumerchik adapted to her position’s demands with newfound patience and skill. Last year, Stagg ended a losing streak with a 17-16 record and aims to build on that success this fall.
Looking forward, Zumerchik expressed optimism, “We have a lot of potential.” She emphasized teamwork and improvement, hoping to propel the team forward. Her commitment resonates with Moran’s vision of a cohesive, successful team.
