The Chicago Cubs’ roster is under scrutiny as they prepare for the final stretch of the season. With the potential return of left-hander Hoby Milner and starter-turned-reliever Edward Cabrera, the bullpen will be a focal point. The Cubs can add two players, including a pitcher, in September, making bullpen decisions critical.
Friday’s 10-8 loss to the Cincinnati Reds highlighted the bullpen’s importance. Manager Craig Counsell and the coaching staff need to find the right mix of eight pitchers for October. The relief corps allowed eight runs, with Trent Thornton’s poor sixth inning being decisive in the loss. Despite his strong record up to then, Thornton made mistakes that proved costly.
Currently, the Cubs’ bullpen consists of three pitchers with minor-league options: Ryan Zeferjahn, Ryan Rolison, and Daniel Palencia. This limits flexibility as the team evaluates the return of Milner, who has been rehabbing from an injury. Reports of his designation for assignment were denied by Counsell, who stated that no decision has been finalized regarding Milner’s status.
Edward Cabrera, who is recovering from blister issues, may soon join the bullpen after batting practice in Arizona. The Cubs plan to use him in shorter stints, aiming to avoid aggravating his previous condition.
Aaron Civale, a long reliever, recently allowed two unearned runs and remains a part of the bullpen alongside Colin Rea. Rea, despite being healthy, has seen limited play due to game situations.
The Cubs offense gained an option with Matt Shaw’s activation from the IL. Shaw, who had struggled with a sprained hand, returned to bolster the team’s lineup. His versatility offers tactical advantages in various infield and outfield positions.
Shaw contributed with a pinch-hit double in the eighth inning, aiding a late comeback effort. Although the rally fell short, the offense demonstrated its ability to create opportunities. Counsell acknowledged the challenge of winning when giving up ten runs, emphasizing the need for improved bullpen performance in the crucial games ahead.
