Marist High School’s Haven Enselman recently achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 1,000 assists in her high school volleyball career. This accomplishment is impressive considering she is only in her sophomore season.
Enselman reflected on this achievement, saying, “It’s definitely a big accomplishment. Hitting 1,000 has been a dream of mine, and now it motivates me to aim for 2,000 or 3,000 assists.” By the end of the weekend, her career total reached 1,034.
During the Mizuno Crimson Classic held at the Great Lakes Volleyball Center in Aurora, Enselman contributed 25 assists, eight digs, and four kills, helping Marist overpower Lockport with scores of 25-8 and 25-11. Her teammates Maggie Kurpeikis and Taylor Berg, who are committed to Michigan and Western Michigan respectively, each added eight kills. The duo was also named co-MVPs of the tournament alongside Enselman, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Lockport, with a 5-2 record, was led by Natalie Bochantin’s seven assists, and she was joined by Hutsyn Timosciek and Kyla Mitchell on the all-tournament team. The Porters reached the finals with a win over Benet, while Marist secured their spot by defeating Lincoln-Way East.
Enselman’s path to achieving 1,000 assists was quick and largely uncelebrated. Marist coach Jordan Vidovic expressed his surprise at her rapid success, commenting, “That is fast.” He praised Enselman’s ability to run a quick offense, saying her passes are often not visibly fast but effective.
Teammate Taylor Berg acknowledged Enselman’s significant impact, stating, “She means a lot to the team. Without her, we wouldn’t be as successful. She maintains the tempo and brings great energy.”
For context, Sarah Kwasigroch holds the Illinois High School Association record with 3,659 career assists, while Marist’s record of 3,075 is held by Molly Murrihy. Enselman’s freshman year concluded with 938 assists. If she continues at this rate, she could conclude her high school career with 3,752 assists.
Coach Vidovic, who has the second-highest boys’ record in the state with 3,704 assists, aims to maximize Enselman’s potential without being overly protective. He stated, “I am not holding back on her. I challenge her relentlessly in practice, and she welcomes those challenges.”
Enselman confirmed her willingness to accept Vidovic’s rigorous standards, explaining, “For me, I like when he is hard on me. It makes me a better player, teammate, and person.”
Additionally, Enselman models her game after Bergen Reilly from Nebraska, who is a three-time All-American. Enselman remarked, “She makes things look really easy. What she does looks really simple.”
