Two Iranian launchers faced strikes from U.S. military forces on Sunday. The decision came after these launchers were seen preparing to fire rockets fitted with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. This information was provided by U.S. Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, the spokesperson for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), in an email to Newsweek.
The launchers were situated on Larak Island and were part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hawkins confirmed.
Recently, CENTCOM completed an operation to clear sea mines from the strait’s international shipping routes. U.S. forces continue to monitor the area and stand ready to ensure the uninterrupted movement of trade through this vital passage.
This strike has disrupted a ceasefire between the nations, leading Tehran to promise retaliation.
According to Iranian state media, as reported by Reuters, the attack resulted in both injuries and fatalities among soldiers and citizens. However, specific figures are yet to be disclosed.
Tehran has announced there will be a “response and punishment” following the attack.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a crucial waterway, central to ongoing tensions due to its significance in transporting oil and goods.
This is an evolving news story, and further updates are expected.
