Flooding Crisis in Nepal and Tibet
Authorities in Nepal have issued warnings of further flooding due to heavy rainfall. In China, the scale of disaster in Tibet is becoming clearer. A glacier collapse five days ago has left communities buried under mud. Rescuers in Nepal are facing difficulties reaching devastated areas.
“The disaster here is overwhelming,” Ferrin Cole, an operations director with Crisis Response International, remarked. “The flood wiped out cities. We’re moving quickly to assist those in need.”
Approximately 100 Americans are reported missing in Nepal and Tibet, stated the State Department. Affected families hold onto hope amidst the chaos. Divya Chandrashekar, a relative of an American missing in Nepal, expressed this hope despite the grim situation.
The death toll in Nepal has reached 781. More than 2,500 people are still missing, including 592 foreign nationals. Nepal’s disaster agency confirmed these figures. The Nepal Tourism Board reported that 289 foreign nationals have been rescued.
In Tibet, China has acknowledged 16 deaths and 546 people missing. This number includes 261 foreign nationals. The overlap between missing persons in Nepal and Tibet remains unclear.
NASA’s Space Telescope Launch
NASA launched a next-generation space telescope on Sunday. It aims to survey hundreds of millions of stars and billions of galaxies. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aims to assist in understanding dark energy and dark matter.
The telescope launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. After 31 minutes, it separated from the rocket. It will orbit around the second sun-Earth Lagrange point, approximately 1 million miles from Earth.
This new observatory is set to enhance our understanding of the universe, similar to the Hubble Space Telescope.
Military Action in the Strait of Hormuz
U.S. forces took military action against Iranian rocket launchers in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. This marks their first military decision in a month.
The Revolutionary Guard Corps was caught attempting to launch rockets with sea mines. The U.S. military had recently cleared sea mines from the strait’s shipping routes.
Iran has vowed retaliation for what it termed a deadly attack. The Trump administration stated its intention to focus on economic pressure rather than military action against Iran.
