The Ukrainian Emergency Service has released a photo showing a residential building in Sloviansk, Donetsk region, damaged by a Russian guided bomb. The city center was hit on Monday, August 31, 2026.
Russian forces continue their relentless attacks on Kyiv and nearby regions, leaving supermarket shelves empty following strikes on warehouses. Ukraine faces constant aerial assaults as Russia intensifies its attacks over four years after invading.
Recent air raid alerts have disrupted routine life in the Kyiv region. Past attacks, including two major ones in July, resulted in nearly 50 civilian deaths, while a Saturday strike claimed at least 38 lives. As schools prepared to reopen, uncertainty loomed over parents sending children back due to safety concerns, despite schools having air raid shelters and online class options.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the nation via social media, stating Russia’s strategy aims to exhaust Ukraine and its people. Ukraine, in turn, has targeted Russian retailers and oil facilities, inducing shortages for ordinary Russians, though Ukrainian strikes are less lethal to civilians.
Ukraine’s Battle Against Jet-Powered Drones
On Monday, black smoke cast shadows over Kyiv as aerial attacks in Brovary and Boryspil injured four people and targeted warehouses, according to regional military head Tymur Tkachenko. President Zelenskyy acknowledged challenges in combating Russia’s increasing use of fast-flying jet-propelled drones. Between Thursday and Sunday, Russia launched nearly 1,500 drones at Ukraine, with around 800 being jet-powered. Combat aircraft currently intercept these drones while Ukraine works on developing effective counter-technology.
President Zelenskyy mentioned four companies advancing interceptor drone technology, with one showing promising results. However, detailed information remains undisclosed.
Food Security in Ukraine
Continuous strikes on food centers have disrupted logistics in Ukraine, sparking fears of shortages. To alleviate public concern, Zelenskyy adviser Serhii Beskrestnov assured citizens via social media that Ukraine will not face hunger. He advised against succumbing to rumors and panic, noting efforts to restructure supply chains. He added Europe’s readiness to aid any food supply shortfalls.
Energy Attacks and Defense Efforts
Russia’s consistent assaults on Ukraine’s power grid raise concerns about civilian hardships in winter. An extensive overnight drone attack targeted Ukraine’s Chernihiv region, damaging an energy facility, according to military administrator Viacheslav Chaus. The Russian Defense Ministry announced plans of massive strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Russia claimed it shot down 239 Ukrainian drones over 14 Russian regions, occupied Crimea, and the Black Sea, as stated by Moscow’s Defense Ministry on Monday. A missile attack by Ukraine on Sunday killed three people in Belgorod, a Russian border city, confirmed by acting regional Governor Alexander Shuvayev.
