The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture has acquired the archive of saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Situated only two blocks from Mr. Rollins’s birthplace, this acquisition adds a significant collection to the center. Rollins, acclaimed as one of jazz’s most respected living improvisers, is known for his unyielding pursuit of musical excellence.
Beyond his renowned dedication to practice, which once required up to eight hours daily, Rollins has long engaged in diverse inquiries. His efforts include extensive spiritual practices and the authorship of personal notes that reflect on both musical techniques and the wider music industry. He has also voiced his thoughts on social issues. While he once began writing an instructional book for the saxophone, he decided not to proceed with the project.
The contents of Rollins’s archive reveal much about his life and career. The Schomburg Center, which is part of the New York Public Library, will process these materials and will eventually make them accessible to the public. Rollins emphasized the importance of sharing his insights, remarking, “I felt that if any young musicians or people were interested in my life and my career, this should be available.”
At 86 years old, Rollins continues to reflect on his journey with an introspective nature. In a recent interview, he stated, “I always liked to improve myself, and I always liked to learn.”
